Kreativ Blogger Award

The wonderful picture book illustrator (and fellow Picture Book Junkie) Alicia Padron so generously gifted me with the Kreativ Blogger award!

I am to list 7 things that I love and pass on the award. Here goes:

I love....
Bananas. I can eat several in a day.
My Wacom Cintiq. One of the best art-related purchases I've ever made.
My dogs. Who rules the house? Ruby and Daisy, and no one else.
My winter hat. It looks ridiculous but people always compliment me on it. (Maybe they're complimenting me on looking ridiculous?)
My husband. He bought me that hat. ;) It's my job to keep him entertained.
My couch. I worked HARD to get that couch in my living room, and it was worth it.
My work. I could never imagine doing anything other than art and I am sure happy I don't have to.

:)

I am now passing along the award to 5 people who I think are AWESOME!!

Carlyn Beccia
Liz Goulet Dubois
Andi Butler
Kathleen Reitz
Ginger Nielson

If you are a picture book writer, why not hire an illustrator on your own?

Dani Jones will tell you! Read her fantastic article "How to find an illustrator for your picture book". All I can say, (while enthusiastically nodding up and down) is "What SHE said!"

It's brilliantly concise, well-written, thorough, and, yes folks, it is all true. Dani knows the scoop, explains it in plain english, and leaves no stone unturned. (The girl knows how to communicate.) Read it... But please don't weep! Digest the information, stick the priceless info in your virtual 'back pocket', and move onward and upward forward with your amazing creative career.

Taz & Petunia - Tight Sketch portrait phase

Here is the finished pencil sketch of Taz & Petunia's portrait! There are many little details in this portrait that are very particular to these two Brussels Griffon doggies. I will posty those details soon; perhaps at the next juncture of the portrait. For now, please enjoy the sketch!

Winner of the Drawing is....

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for all of your great advice, thoughts, opinions, feedback on my merging blogs dilemma. I was so happy to get such a great, varied, and helpful, responses from you all. You all have really helped me a great deal and your feedback has been very valuable to me. Currently, I'm still deciding, but, I am leaning heavily towards merging my blogs. (I think I just need to get a little more accustomed to the idea first.)

On to the drawing! I assigned everybody a number, and then used an online Random Number Generator to pick a winner. The winner is...DRUMROLL PLEASE... Shelley Charlesworth! Shelley is a pet portrait clien of mine, Axel and Henry's mom! (And she is also is just a great gal too!) Shelley, thanks so much for playing and for chiming in your feedback! This lovely little Kitty Librarian print is on it's way to you! :)

Thanks everyone for helping me out!!

Taz & Petunia

Top: "Circus" style.
Bottom: "Trellis" style.

Taz & Petunia are two Brussels Griffon doggies that I'm currently doing a portrait of! Boy ae they cute!! I will share the progress with you here.

Last week, I came up with two thumbnail compositional ideas for the portrait. T & P's mom had a lot of great ideas for the portrait, and I tried to integrate all of them. I found that her ideas line up great with my aethetic sensibilities! I'm excited to see where this portrait goes.

Urging the U.S. Government to Protect Independent Artists

We are starting a new chapter (HORRAY!!!) in our country's history very, very soon. The Orphan Works Bill is *still* around (like a goblin in the shadows) and still threatening to take away our rights/protection as image creators. It's so ugly - - it's really unfathomable that something like this could happen in the U.S... But yet, here we are -- it is a fact of life, and it's not going away. We have to rally to voice our opposition, and we have to do it now.

Aside from the Orphan Works bill, we in general just need more overall SUPPORT for the arts in this country!! The arts are integral to our culture, touching it in every single way. It's SO much more than just making things look pretty. The arts are such a huge part of the groundwork for cultural growth, intellectual growth, education, understanding other cultures and other people's experiences, among other things.

There are two things you can do (from the comfort of your own computer) to lend your voice and help support artists and protect our work from image theft in this country.

Change.org created this web site called the Citizen's Briefing Book. It's basically a "soapbox" of sorts for you, me or anyone to post their thoughts on a specific issue facing the country - something that needs attention, needs to be addressed, and has a lot of supporters. Individuals can go and post their support to specific entries - like a blog. All entries are then vetted and the most popular ones will be looked over and hopefully addressed, by President-Elect Obama's team. There is an Orphan Works entry! Please consider posting on this entry to make your voice heard. Support artists and the arts - and please help kill the OW Bill!

Citizens Briefing Book:

Oppose The OW Post

Another oppose the OW post

PLEASE VOTE.

Please note, you need to sign up at Change.gov in order to be able to vote. It's easy and only takes a minute.

The other way you can click to help is more generalized. I am posting the blurb here, just as it was sent to me by a friend:

"Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts. While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or Culture for centuries, The United States has never created such a position. Those in the arts need this and our country needs the arts now more than ever.

Please take a moment to sign this important petition and then pass it
on to your friends and colleagues."

Share your advice and be entered in a drawing for an ACEO glossy archival print

HERE'S MY DILEMMA....I need your help...

I am considering merging my two blogs. One is dedicated to my pet portrait life, the other is dedicated to my children's illustration and other artistic pursuits life. It's tricky. Since I'm trying to simplify my life, the idea of merging the blogs seems like a no-brainer. The sticking point: each blog is pretty specific to its own subject matter. This one is admittedly looser and more flexible, but still pretty well focused on children's art... and, my pet portrait blog is really all about pet portraits and all the things and involved in that world. I like to have the pet portrait blog separate, because I can more easily share links to other pet portrait artists and to the pet lovers' community at large. If I merge blogs, the link list will be edited and then merged with the link list I have here. (That may be just too "when worlds collide" for me). But, on the other hand, merging the blogs could help in some ways. It will broaden my audience on both fronts, by default. But, flip-side: will it turn people off who are only interested in one thing or the other? You tell me!

Please leave a comment with your thoughts. I'll collect all of your names until midnight, Saturday January 17. Then I will do a drawing for an archival Artist Card glossy print of the above illustration Kitty Librarian! The drawing will be held on Sunday, January 18th.

Don't hold back -- I'd love to hear what you think. The good and the bad. Honesty is welcome - please share.

I just posted my first of what I am sure will be at least a few progress reports on one of my latest pet portraits. You can see it here, on my pet portrait blog.

Fiona, Olive & Abe

Here is one of the latest portraits I'm working on. Fiona and Olive are two lovely kitty cats, and Abe is the house hedgehog. Very cute little guy, if I do say so myself.

These are very rough thumbnails for composition. I began doing these roughies for clients awhile ago - it's an added step but I think it is a necessary one, AND it also leads to a more well-thought-out composition! SO when I go in and start working on the finer points, the framework is in place. Natural progression really. I don't post these often to this blog, but it is an integral part of the process.

I came up with two options here. They are both very similar but have specific differences (which I went through in detail with the client). Hope you enjoy seeing the process of this portrait!

Felted Pet Portraits

Felted Pet Portrait by KaysK9s.etsy.com

I covet felted miniatures of pets! I first discovered them on a Flickr photostream when I came across Amelia Makes Art's amazing doggie sculptures. They are just outrageous!! Ever since then, I've wanted to commission Amelia to make two sculptures of my pugs.

Felted Pet Portrait by ameliamakesart.etsy.com

Anyway, I discovered that she also keeps an Etsy shop. I also learned that there are several other felt pet artists on Etsy as well... GFelted, Kay's K9 shop, Free Haven Farm, Coraldee, Inspirations By Karen. Each artist has his/her own special aesthetic and style of designing the miniature doggies (and kitties, too). It's worth the time to shop around and see the unique differences in each artists' style before deciding on one. Just as no two painted or drawn pet portrait artists are alike, so it is with sculpted felt pet portrait artists. I look forward to getting my own sometime. I keep saying it and have not done it yet, but I will in due time.

Pet Portrait Story in Boston Globe

The other day, the Boston Globe printed a story on local pet portrait artists. You can read it here.
Dog aficionado Brian Henderson, who runs the local Boston dog lovers' site DogBoston, was quoted several times in the story! It was nice to read the article and hear from someone I 'know'!
Anyway, he in turn posted about the story on HIS blog, but he ALSO gave me a little plug as well on his blog adjunct to the story, which was really nice of him. You can see/read it here.

In Pet Portrait News, I'mstarting work on TWO pet portraits. The first one features two ADORABLE Brussels Griffon doggies. Boy is this one going to be cute. Wait til you see these guys...

The second one is going to be really different -- I'll tell you why... It features two beautiful long-haired kitties, which is not out of the norm, BUT! It also will feature... drumroll... a HEDGEHOG! My first hedgehog! This will be exciting.

So please check back for portrait progress. I'll be starting these momentarily...
