Book Review: The Great Reindeer Rebellion

The Great Reindeer Rebellion
By Lisa Trumbauer
Illustrated by Jannie Ho
Sterling Publishing, 2009
> Book on Amazon

First and foremost, The Great Reindeer Rebellion is a story told in rhyming verse. By default, this makes it a picture book after my own heart.

(SPOILER ALERT) The Great Reindeer Rebellion follows Santa's trials of auditioning a new group of animals to run the Christmas Eve sleigh ride, because his reindeer have gone on strike due to inhospitable working conditions. It's a very clever backdrop to explain the basic concept of unionization, and the story tackles this feat in a way that is easy to digest, totally unassuming and not didactic in the least. The stories' poem style (Ballad, I think) is a riff on "Twas the night before Christmas". This adds a built-in familiarity to the story from the get-go, and kids and adults alike will instantly feel a sense of comfort on the very first reading. Given the poem's cadence, it's also a fun book to read out loud together.

The story itself is fun AND funny—Santa's search for a new group of sled-pulling substitutes leaves him quite exasperated after every audition. This is my first picture book by author Lisa Trumbauer, and surely it won't be my last. (RANT ALERT) I have heard time and time again that "it's hard to do rhyme well" and "poetry is a hard sell" in children's trade. I love to write in rhyme myself, and while these remarks are always a bit daunting to hear for an aspiring children's author-poet, they would never stop me from choosing rhyme as my form of writing. (After all, these things choose YOU, not the other way around. ;)). After continually hearing those words over and over (...on deaf ears... ;)), and in this publishing climate to boot, seeing books like this one getting published (and presented so beautifully and respectably) is a very good reminder that solid writing is solid writing. At the end of the day, that is what matters.

The story also inspires some highly entertaining visual narrative. Illustrator Jannie Ho's artwork is her signature visual playground, but here, she tackles some interesting new ground (new to me, anyway). The likes of Santa, Elves, Reindeer on strike (and in hot tubs!) are composed with lots of character and humor. To me, Jannie's work most always has a sort of deadpan-whimsy about it, and here, there's an additional underlying bit of saltiness kicking in! Fun nuggets in the details of some of the spreads reward the viewer and add layers to the story. Jannie's current admirers will be ecstatic, and I've no doubt this book will bring more fandom her way! The richly colored spreads are tactile, too - they're enhanced by the judicious use of spot gloss.

This is a physically substantial book that feels good to hold. The pages are double thick. This does not make the book heavy weight-wise, but it does make it feel like a thick, juicy steak in a picture-book buffet. Pick one up, and you'll see what I mean.

The Great Reindeer Rebellion is built to last many a holiday season, and the story, subject matter and art are all timely AND timeless. A contemporary holiday classic, in my book!

Thankful Things

The new year is fast upon us, and it has caused me to reflect on things I've been thankful for over the past year. In no particular order, here are a bunch of things I have been REALLY THANKFUL for in the year 2009.

Brigham and Women's Hospital ICU Neuro Unit
My mother had a massive stroke in April. The BWH ICU Neuro team saved her life. Period.

My sisters and brothers-in-law
What can I say, everyone really showed some "true grit" this year with my mom's stroke. I think we all showed each other how tough we all are!! I am really thankful for my family.

My children's rep, Tugeau 2
I had the craziest, bumpiest year and my rep Nicole was very understanding when I needed to be off the radar for awhile. While I'm now back in the saddle now full swing, I really appreciate that she and the rest of Team Tugeau 2 were so understanding and accommodating during that difficult time.

My Boston.com comrades
My team at my day job, especially my manager, were uber-supportive this year regarding my mom's stroke. They REALLY came through for me this year.

Picture Book Junkies

My online illustrator's group, the PBJ's as we call ourselves, have all weathered some major change this year, and we have managed to keep our group rolling right along. We almost ended the group last year, when we closed up the blog, but we decided to cut ourselves some slack-keep going in a new less structured way. I know we are not done metamorphosizing together as a group, but as for where we stand right now, I'm really proud of us that we managed to stick it out. We have grown stronger as a  group through all the ups and downs. I am very thankful!

Etsy sellers
I love to sell on Etsy but I almost appreciate the finds even more. I've becom a crazed fan of several Etsy sellers. I never cease to get compliments on the items I purchase through some of these indie artists and craftspeople. When I get a compliment, I share the name of the particular seller and where they can purchase an item from seller. Word of mouth IS the greatest form of advertisement. To that end, a couple of my favorites are Pink Lemonade Boutique and Simbiosis by Julia Bravo.

Boston Handmade group
I joined BH in January. I am so glad that I joined the group when I did. I met some really fabulous artists and craftspeople and experienced an in-person community like none other I've ever experienced as an adult creative businessperson on my own. It also helped me get through what was the toughest situation I've ever been in. Doing shows with the BH group gave me another creative-focus-with-deadline when I really, really needed it. The deadlines really were self imposed, not client-driven, like illustration work. But besides making a good showing for my own interests, I wanted to do it for my new BH team! So even though it was a really difficult time, BH really helped to give me a different focus that I really needed when I really needed it. It also taught me a lot about merchandising and  displaying merchandise as well as gave me plenty of fuel for the fires of creative product development. (Additionally, this experience is something I can draw from now, while pursuing my goal to become successful with licensing my artwork to manufacturers.) I left the BH group in December 2009 for reasons I previously explained in a previous post. But being a member of BH really helped me to come to many conclusions about my creative career. Plus, I made a boat load of friends/local creative alliances. All told, it was a really good thing for me and I hope for them, too!

Making the hard decisions
I'm grateful that I've been able to make some tough decisions that in some ways, would have been easier to not make at all. In addition to quitting BH, I am hanging up my pet portraiture this year. I am hoping to have my final portrait COMPLETED by the END of this year for my fresh start. It's really important to periodically reassess your goals and see if they are working for you in the incarnation they currently are "set" at. Personally, I have now STOPPED letting things get in the way of my MOST IMPORTANT GOALS after a couple of years of letting "other things get in the way" constantly. I am now paying full attention to my inner compass and heeding it's advice moving forward. I'm happy with nervous excitement for the new year -- all I will strive for in the and all I will reap.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

More Gifts

I received a wonderful and fun holiday package in the mail the other day from art licensing Superwoman, my guru & mentor, none other than Carol Eldridge!

What is this I see? A cute little box... I think I see a cute little face in there...

It IS a cute little face-it is a little snowman head! And he sports a little red and white polka mushroom on his hat! (The mushroom is suspended by wire, so you can position it any way you like!) Adorable.

And even the bottom is carefully painted and signed, too...

I am a lucky girl who has some very kind and generous creative friends.

Receiving Gifts

As I mentioned in a previous post, I visited my extremely talented and funny friend, famed licensed artist Ellen Crimi-Trent the weekend before last. I would like to share with you some of the faboo things she gave me in our fun Holiday Swap... Check it out!

Look at the snowman gift bag! The ear muffs are flocked and they are soft and velvety.

I realize that I am a super geek but I never get tired of seeing friend's/other artists I admire's names in print and on the bottom of a gift bag, for instance. I know it is very geeky of me but hey, it is a big deal. It is something I aspire to myself and I am proud to know Ellen and others who are so successful at market in this business! I think it always will be exciting for me, I will always be cheering. And, look, it had BETTER be exciting and stay that way, if I plan to be in the art licensing biz myself for the long haul -and I do!!  :)

Here is another type of gift package featuring the same collection of art. This one comes with a cute red ribbon. Very snazzy.

Look at this cute gift bag with the adorable character doggie with the funny blue sweater and the gift! On one side (the top pic), there is flat art. On the other side (bottom pic) it is a die-cut 3D dog attached to the bag.(You can see the shadow where the doggy stands out.) Pretty cool! And, there are also greeting cards in this collection, which also feature the 3D design. So neat!

I love this candy cane bag - I especially like how the die-cut candy cane card dangles from the handle. Very creative. Plus, I simply LOVE this shade of green! I also enjoy the background texture.

Here are some beautiful fabrics Ellen gave me from her Woodland Friends line of fabrics from Clothworks. I am not a big sewer, but this collection of cuteness warrants a date with the needle and thread! This fabric is just "too-too", to not be a permanent fixture in my home! :) I'm thinking pillows...

My holidaze...

Last weekend I visited my VERY talented artist friend Ellen Crimi-Trent. Besides doing lots of work stuff, we took some time to do a fun holiday stuff-swap! Check out her cute bird up in my tree!
(You can get one of your own Ellen birdy ornaments here.)

Here is the lettering side of one of my ornaments! (The other side is an illustration of a little girl carrying a stack of gifts.) I love doing lettering and this was a fun way to utilize it.

Here are several packages I sent off to clients and, hopefully, FUTURE clients. :) :)
It's a lot of work to do this, but in my experience, adding "the personal touch" is an excellent way (and maybe the best way) to reach potential new business and to foster current relationships!! :) I always feel good after doing a mailing knowing that I sent off happy packages off to people who will receive them as a joyful and unexpected surprise! What fun! :)

And the winner is...

Angie Hofman of Maddy Maze Studio (follow her on Twitter: @MaddieMazeStudio)! Angie and Gina Perry (Follow her on Twitter: @ginamarieperry) both correctly guessed that I puchased the cute little chickie. (I actually purchased both of these little chickies. I didn't want to break up the happy couple!)

I used a random generator to pick the winner, and Angie won. Congratulations, Angie! You will receive a variety of my holiday greeting cards in the mail! I'll get them in the mail for you tomorrow morning! :)

My goals are distilled and concentrated. I am ready for a new journey.

I said good-bye to my Boston Handmade group yesterday. I can't believe how hard that was to do. Geez, no one died!! So why was it so hard!! *laugh*.  Through the group, I've made a bunch of wonderful friends and have possibly - hopefully! - built strong foundations for some lasting relationships. The community is so special and so unique that it was very hard for me to leave. But I knew that I *had* to do it, in order to focus on other things I want to do-- my long term goals. The things that need care and watering and feeding and pruning regularly. The things that are so important to me, that I have strong ambitions to do, the very things that have been getting short shrift for a variety of reasons. No more. The things I will be focusing on in the very near future -- the ONLY things I will be focusing on -- are Children's Illustration and Art Licensing.

Who KNEW it takes so long for someone to extract themselves? I have been kind of like an octopus, with eight hands in eight different creative places. I'm exaggerating of course. I don't have eight arms, and I have not been balancing eight concentrations. But for th past, oh, I-don't-know-how-long, I have somehow cultivated this position where I have ended up being pulled in so many directions. Somewhere along the way, I got swept up in things that had little to do with my true, over-reaching long term goals. Also to be fair and honest, some of my goals changed. Really changed. (Yes, people, we are allowed to change our goals as our lives and our focuses change. The only person you need permission from is yourself.) So I needed to pay attention to that as well, and figure things out.

Anyway, I'm feeling great and a big sense of renewal because, though I have not yet concluded my work in pet portraits, I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I feel new, I feel refocused, I finally have made the tough decisions that I had to make! I know what I want, how I want to spend my time and on what in my creative life. And I know what I am willing to give up to accomplish this.

I have one more pet portrait before I am finished with pet portraits completely.  Her name is Rosie. I know she's going to be a beauty. I'm excited to work on Rosie's portrait and now I have the mental space and clarity to do it. I am going to complete the final sketch this week and then, on client approval I will move forward with the ink and watercolor. It's a big important moment for me, working on Rosie. I will give her all I have.
