Baby Shower Day at Upstairs on the Square

Here is our seating area. (More about it below!)
Today was the day of my friend Stephanie's baby shower! Mutual friend Ann and myself co-hosted the shower at the destination/event restaurant Upstairs On The Square. It was such a fun day! We took a departure from Steph's first baby shower which I hosted three years ago See here and we outsourced it.
This was Ann's idea, and she truly had her thinking cap on, because it was absolutely the perfect way to do it! It was less stressful, less work for everyone, plus it simply could not have been any nicer if we had done all of the cooking and decorating ourselves. It was also more of a grown-up event, we had the focus solely on the woman of honor and on having a great time together, with less divided focus for the moms in the group. Got to meet some new ladies, reconnect with some old ones, get to know other ones better, and all in a fun, inviting and relaxing atmosphere. It was great! A few pics below,  but please see my Flickr to see all of my photos from the day. Enjoy!
Custom menu was a nice touch!

(We prefer to call it the Zebra banquette, thankyouverymuch. :) )
Look at these lovely flowers Steph gifted each of the co-hosts with! Thank you, Steph!

Off to press

I've been mentally preparing for Surtex and doing little things to get ready for months now. But in terms of hard-core prep, I have been in the tornado for about a month. There is still so much left to do, but I am finally feeling like I am in decent shape.

To pull things together the way that I want it has been an interesting exercise. My banners have all been designed, sent, proofed and approved, and are in production now. In some ways, it's a load off. In other ways, I'm flying blind. I've never sent such a 'physically large' or 'important-to-me large' job to print. Plus, I know what they will look like (well, for the most part I do. I certainly hope I do!) But, I am not a technical genius, and there was a fair amount of measuring and numerically-figuring-out involved. So, once they make it up on the walls, I'm sure hoping that they all fit properly and correctly. And, I hope none of the colors decide on a whim to clash at the last minute. All told, It's going to be exciting to see everything come together. I've also designed and placed orders for print and promotional goodies, getting all of my my materials all ready for the show. Most are off and printing now. Aaaahhh. No matter what happens, I'll be smiling, I'll be happy, I'll be grateful, and I'll be ready.

The Press Kit. I actually quite hemmed and hawed on doing this. It was such a huge undertaking to make happen, on top of everything else that needed to be done. It was so BIG... I'd never done one before, and well, it's a little nervewracking to take on this type of project for the first time.. As such, at the last minute, I bailed.. But then, at the 30-seconds-to-go mark, I renegged! I switched gears, I got really inspired, did some research, got even *more* inspired, and then bang, as if possessed by the Easter Bunny banging out all those baskets for the big day, I did it.

I just hate missed opportunities. It is important to be ready for anything. I generally walk around feeling like I am ready for anything which, let's face it, is the gift of delusion (thanks mom!), so in order to keep that going, I at least have to come through and make the physical effort with the Press Kit. So this weekend, I went for it, just Tasmanian Devil'ed it into creation. And I'm so happy I did. I think it is going to come together just great. I look forward to seeing all of the printed pieces once they arrive, and then piecing it all together. Hey, the first time at anything is an expiriment— there is not a hard and fast rule roadmap for a Press Kit. There are guidelines (thank goodness!) but most of the work is creating and putting together the content, and that comes from you and you alone. Therefore some personal excavation, list-making, organizing, time-mapping all come into play in the process. (No wonder people can get overwhelmed at the prospect of making one of these things!) I learned a whole lot more about myself and my business by going through the process. Now I'm so 'in it' that I might have really caught the bug! I also do marketing & advertising illustration and design as it is (and am a total marketing/ad geek at that). Turning the tables on myself, dissecting and pulling apart WellerWishes became much more than just the process of creating a Press Kit. It also served as a great brainstorming process to further distill the philosophy, ideals, target market, current offerings and services and present and future goals of WellerWishes. (Kind of like writing a business plan!) So all in all, though it may have hurt (a little), it was, overall, a HUGE positive. I now look forward to creating my Press Kit version 2.0, because, of course, after barely finishing version 1.0 there are now 101 revisions I want to make. But 2.0 is bound to be a whole lot easier, now that I have the general framework completed. Yee-ha!

So, creating the Press Kit and accompanying materials has really put me in a great headspace (albeit an exhausted one). I highly recommend doing it, if you have not already. I plan to do a dedicated post on this at some point soon, to share my experience, show you what I've done, and share some resources with you that I found particularly helpful.

I'm excited to do some showing-and-telling, but that will have to wait a bit! Until then, I'm going to continue to PRESS ON and get ready for the big show! 'Til later!

New in store at Boutique Fabulous

This weekend I had dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, East Coast Grill, in Inman Square. One thing I love about coming to Inman Square for dinner is we inevitably will end up walking by a store I love calledBoutique Fabulous.

This is a shop that puts its money where its mouth is, so to speak, because it truly IS Fabulous! They carry lots of very unique, "gotta have it" -type goods from the likes of Blue Q, Demdaco, and Fred, just off the tippy-top of my head, plus a bunch of smaller or less-known companies, and some indie jewelry designers as well.

Whoever does the buying, merchandising and displays at Boutique Fab is extremely talented! Whenever I come, I just gobble up every single display with my senses! There is just no skimming the surface for me here- no way! I always have to "do the whole store", and I can't rush through it, either!

There is always something new, innovative, unique, quirky, silly, fun, or totally great-smelling here (they carry great candles, lotions and soaps, too). In fact I usually do not walk out of here without a soap or a candle!

It was fun for me to see all the great companies represented in the shop. Just for fun, how many companies and/or product lines you can identify in the photos?

Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Baby Shower Fun!

Yes, a dear friend of mine is with (second) child, and another friend and I are co-planning and co-hosting the shower! (See my post here from Steph's first baby shower.

We are having the shower at a local restaurant which is beautiful and very whimsical in design. They host a lot of bridal showers, wedding showers, graduation parties and events of that nature. In fact, my preggy friend & her husband actually had their wedding at this restaurant, when it was at its former location (the restaurant moved a few years ago). Anyhow, it is sure to be a wonderful event, and I am looking forward to it! I hope you enjoy the invite I created for it (above). Monkeys... they are great for ALL occasions, wouldn't you agree?

The "B" stands for... Gigantic

So many things to do!

At the moment, I am working on my Surtex prep as well as files for my debut fabric collection with Northcott Fabrics. I've got a lot on my plate, but I couldn't be happier. This is all work I have been dreaming putting into action for so long, and I am doing it all! What could be better than that?

I have been taking note of some technical issues here in the studio... Files are slow to open, slow to save. This is because many of the files I am currently working on are absolutely gigantic. So gigantic that my working files have been .psb files, instead of .psd files. PSB is the file extension for extra large photoshop working files. I believe it is used for files above 2GB. Since my Surtex most of my banners are 3 feet wide by 7 feet high, I'm working in .PSB format. (I can only guess that the B stands for BIG.) Anyway, I am trying to figure out easier and quicker routes to finish the banners. I have many other tasks to complete, so time is of the essence. I have decided my next computer will be a MacPro.

Wish me luck!

Pulse check: Something to...

Melody Miller's blog, Ruby Star Rising
Something to read...
This post by designer & artist Melody Miller blew my mind. She is so honest, and just so good at wrinting it all succinctly! I'm inspired to do my own "Things that didn't work out" post. Actually, her entire blog rocks too. Bookmark it!

Something to look at...
Here are some artists I am loving right now. Actually, I've been fans of each of them for a long time now, but don't think I've ever shared that here before. Good stuff!

Dansko Penelope boot

Something to wear (on your feet)...
I've worn these boots all winter long... except for when we had two feet of snow (when I instead wore these, which are awesome for deep snow). Anyway, these Dansko Penelope's have passed the long-term relationship test, and I plan to buy another pair next year. But for now, I'll probably continue to wear them until it's 75 degrees out... And then I look forward to switching to these, the Best Sandals I Have Ever Worn, hands down... (...story coming!)

Dansko's Sissy sandal

I discovered Dansko's Sissy years ago on other people's feet. I coveted them when I would see someone wearing them, but I pooh-poohed trying them out myself because, well, you could say I have "problem feet" when it comes to finding sandals that work for me. So one day, I bit the bullet. I reasoned, I can always return them and have nothing to lose (Zappo's pays for shipping back). Guess what happened? Loved the first pair so much, by the end of the summer, I'd bought two more pairs. (And I am not one of those shoe goddesses). THAT is how great these are. I walked all over NYC with these sandals, Las Vegas. Atlanta. Houston. Not a blister. They are adjustable, so no problem. In the summer months, they are IT, baby. If you think they are cute, and have "sandal dysfunction" like me, read more glowing reviews.

Desigual Gardi skirt

Something to wear (on the rest of you)...
I have been eyeballing this Desigual skirt for quite awhile now. (Weeks, maybe.) It is visible through a shop window that I pass by on most days of the week. Today, I looked... and looked... turned around.. went in the store... tried it on (only 6 skirts, and they had my size. fate!)... and purchased the skirt from the friendly shopkeeper. I came home with not only have a cute new skirt, but I also have a new place to shop in my hood ...for MORE cute Desigual skirts!

NBC's "Outsourced" - Ted Rappaport (Todd) & Rizwan Manji (Rajiv)
Something to watch...
I've become hooked on NBC's Outsourced. This show has polarized many based chiefly on the shows' premise, which is too bad. A lot of people are missing out on a great - and unique! - show here. I find that the things people have quickly assumed about the show without watching it, are not true, and have been wiped clean away for me upon watching the show and getting to know the characters, their  relationships, and their motivations. Yes, character development is in the house, folks. The show is refreshing and quite funny, with some sharp writing. Plus, I LOVE seeing Indian culture on a sitcom! YES, it is STILL a sitcom, and that's important to keep in mind in EVERY aspect. A horse is a horse (of course of course...) BUT, within sitcom constraints, they do a really good job of integrating  cultural details, events, and the intricacies of everyday life in an authentic, real and normal way, and they do so with honor and respectfulness. I just LOVE that. Hey, I am all for more visibility of other cultures in all media, in general. But when the show is as funny and fresh as this one is, it's really something to celebrate... and keep on the air!

"Outsourced" movie soundtrack

Something to listen to...

(Sensing a domino effect?)  Outsourced the TV show was actually based on a movie of the same name which came out around 2007. Apparently it's been well reviewed and has even won a few film festival awards. I still have not seen the film, though it is on my list, however, the soundtrack is really lovely, filled with some great tunes from India similar to what you might hear in some scenes and transitions of the TV show. Love it!
