Illustration Friday: OBSESSED... with Ballet!

There is a ballet school/theatre in my neighborhood. Every day, I am surprised and delighted by the seriousness of these students heading to class. These little girls take their ballet very seriously. I love the dichotomy: ballet combines this mix of art and athleticism that stirs in them this fiery ambition—or basic instinct—to strive for absolute excellence! It's a testament to the power of positive thinking and clear, unfettered focus on a goal. I can see it in their eyes every time one of them rushes by on the street to get to class.

They inspired this art collection, and the name, too: Corps De Ballet. It's a name that  respects the craft, the athleticism, the art and the importance of ballet to these students.  But wait, it is not all serious! :) There is a real sense of humor and fun and silliness inherent in the group, as well. There is also a sophistication factor in the line, palette and texture. I  am so happy to bring a fresh, new, elegant art option to this market. I know modern young girls and tweens will appreciate the alternative!

Illustration Friday: Perennial

Long time since my last IF, but the theme sang to me this week. I have inspirational quotes on my mind, and this is one of my all-time favorites. Short and to the point, no beating around the bush!

I know that Nike has trademarked the phrase "Just Do It", and I have to thank them for that. If not for seeing this quote everywhere for my entire adult life, perhaps the message would never have seeped in so deeply. It is, for sure, perennial - it has never lost it's power to grow on me, year after year.

See JiveCats Now

Want to see a Sneak Peek of my JiveCats fabric collection with Northcott Fabrics? Guess what?
The wait is over! Hop on over to Northcott! It's not available for retail sale until Feb. 2012, but, check it OUT -- JiveCats is UP!! Whoo hoo! I am seriously thrilled to see the entire collection up on the site for everyone's eyeballs to enjoy and get a little chuckle and fun!

(Quick note: when you get there, please make sure to scroll down the entire page in order to see all the fun pieces of the collection! And there are two colorways - Sassy Pink and Funky Town Brown - so please be sure to check them both out, too!)

I hope you LOVE it! I hope you are as TICKLED as I am! I am incredibly proud of this collection and of all the hard work that went into it, and I am - gasp! - really excited to break out the needle and thread  — and then pricking my fingers a few times of course (hazing)! I will certainly also be commissioning other fine sewers to make stuff for me as well , because hey, I can sew, as in put a needle to thread, but I can't SEW, as in deft talent and grace with a needle! Hmmm, I can already list ten things I ABSOLUTELY NEED right off the top of my head... and that's even without making a real list! Gee, I better start researching freelance sewers huh! :) (...Know of any good ones??)

The FUN Print (not the FINE print... this is the FUN print)... These are the things you can count on from me as we get closer to fabric release date (it's aways off, February 2012 - but time does fly):

• There will be fabric giveaways.
• There will be a series of in-depth art process blog posts about the creation of the collection.
These will include...
-rough first sketches-to-final art
-technical details including size of actual art, how I created repeats, and details of how I planned my file out for the printing process

-More fun, more technical and creative art-geeking out, more fun chitter-chatter and pictures and pictures and pictures....

So stay tuned in the coming months for a series of posts. I'll announce posts on Twitter/Facebook too, so you do not miss ANYthing!

101

the number is hypothetical

It's been awhile since I've blogged, I know... Throughout late May, all of June and early July, I've been working hard on new art, connecting with potential clients, and executing mock ups for presentations, connecting and reconnecting with people again, more mock ups, more chats... In art licensing, you do a LOT of work before anything ever comes to fruition. It is the nature of the business, and if you don't like it, then save yourself the pain and find another career. Also, you have got to let "rejection" (air quotes!) roll off you like water off a ducks' back. Onto the next thing, as immediately as possible. It's so important to not take companies passing on your art and concepts personally. In fact, I don't even like calling it rejection, because honestly, that is not what it is. It's more likely "a zillion different random mini-reasons why your work is just not the right fit at that precise moment in time". Save the energy, and know that it is never personal. So you move forward with that knowledge, and that's that.

Honestly, I can suck it up one hundred times— "that's that" and move forward, positive-minded, no lack of zeal for the next door I'm knocking on, plenty of gas in the tank, not a blink... and then, that 101st time comes... it's a longer pause, and a little bit of a "time out". Of course, the 101st blind-sides you. Because, for some reason, you became really emotionally wrapped up in 101st. The 101st maybe sort of sublimated the 100 that came before it. The 101st can steamroll you.... But ultimately, it can be a catalyst to reassess and rethink your strategies.

Well (you know where this is going..) this week, I had one of those rare "101st" moments. First, I processed and responded to the specific situation that caused it. Then, I spent a lot of my time thinking about the bigger picture. After a lot of thinking, I still don't have any solid answers to my questions, a list of actions to take. I'm only starting to wrap my mind around possibilities. But, I'm trying to figure it out. 101 is not ignorable, and maybe the importance pinned on 101 is in direct measure to the need to reassess the machine. I'm not exactly sure... But the important thing is, anything that acts as a catalyst for positive evolution is a good thing. So, with that, I say, Cheers to the 102nd! Hey, by the time it rolls around, I am bound have a little bit more of this figured out.
